Shotguns or Revolvers?

I was wondering, are shotguns even worth it? They dont seem like they are to me, the damage is shitty, even right up to the enemy, I find myself doing more damage with Revolvers and other guns, Revolvers have good damage, good elements, scopes, and can be used as a close range, mid range or long range. And if it's a masher, then shotguns are pretty pointless aren't they? So I really need some help with this, Revolvers or Shotguns?

I am on my second playhtough of borderlands, and my current revolver just isn't packing enough punch. Does anyone have a lvl 48 gold revolver they would be willing to part with. I have enough elemental damage revolvers, unless it is a lvl 48 chimera, but otherwise a revolver with high power would be preferable. My current revolver is a Swift Equalizer damage 103x7, accuracy-72.1, fire rate 1.9, Unending Firepower, +15 ammo regen, +52% reload speed, +34% RoF. My gamertag is Shang Jiang Hai and I'm playing the xbox edition.
