My Beef With Gearbox
Ed note: The following doesn't necessarily reflect the opinions of the site. We just like to promote interesting and well-written pieces from the forums.
Does anybody else feel a little cheezed with Gearbox's approach to the widespread issues that surround Borderlands?
As everyone knows already, the game is far from perfect, and as such cannot ever be expected to be completely perfect, it was an audacious, imaginative endeavor anyways and is good for the most part.
But after selling however many millions of copies worldwide, it seems that Gearbox has dropped the ball on customer satisfaction and continued support of (their) game. Multiple issues have been reported, as of yet, no results, but the promise of 'pending deployment.'
In the meanwhile, Gearbox continues to rake in additional revenue through the sales of TWO DLC packs already, with one more in the works. I think they are missing something here thats VERY important only because consumers like us are only too happy to pump them up with even more of our hard earned tax-dollars. Erm, so when are you guys, like gonna fix the stuff thats already broken?
Gearbox should be concentrating much more on resolving current hot issues that plague systems currently to make the original game a much better, stable platform, by addressing viral items, modified game-breaking items, glitches and other known issues. These issues have been known for MONTHS now and it is unacceptable by any standard that there is no patch as of yet to address the most pressing of these issues which affects game quality and ultimately users enjoyment of the game.
The online component of the game is essentially broken because of all the widespread modification abuse which should have not occurred in the first place. I wonder if Gearbox has even been listening to their customers - its not a small sample of people who have issues with modified items, we are talking about the vast majority of the existing customer base who are patiently waiting for some very needed changes.
Instead, Gearbox have their developers working 'hard' to deliver additional content on what is essentially still a buggy platform with the expectation that many consumers will buy into it regardless of its quality because its obvious that quality concerns are of low priority to Gearbox. Gearbox, its the gamers that should be your #1 priority, not trying to bleed every last dollar out of consumers. Get the first part right and you will be ensured success because the gamers will support. Right now, Gearbox is just coming off as another greedy corporation. Nonetheless, it is partly the consumers to blame for this.
Tsk Tsk Gearbox... get your gears in order and start fixing the pressing stuff already. Lets put it this way: other reputed game development houses like Infinity Ward are waaaay ahead of the curve compared to you. The main reason? They actually listen to the gamers, and are committed to delivering high quality games. Gearbox can't even compare in terms of product quality, there is no comparison.
Borderlands was a good unique title but was released with far too little playtesting and this is very obvious. Ask any gamer and they would say that they would rather wait for a developer to get a game right the first time rather then purchase a broken product, to only have to wait for some patch 'x' number of months down the road to be released. All that does is piss gamers off. Take some tips. Lets not get started comparing how long patches take to deploy because other developers don't nearly take as long as 2 months.
You have kept everyone waiting long enough, and I am sure this will not reflect well on the attitude of your valued customers to your organization and future games. To be honest, had I known that Gearbox would act in such regard to support their own product, I would not have invested my dollars in the game to support, and do not intend to support further until consumers see some results. I have been a gamer for years and all I know is that development houses with this kind of track record do not reap success in the long run.
Terminal is having reservations about Gearbox software...
poor customer support = poor company values = poor quality products
That's unfortunate but true. Minor patch every 2 months at least would have solved many of the different bugs of this game since...
Nice write-up. I'm making some small changes so I can put this on the front page with the usual caveat that all opinions are those of the author.
I very much disagree with a lot of what you said. While it's true that the next bug fixes have been a long time coming, it's unlikely that the people that are busy with designing the DLC are all the same people responsible for creating patches. And something like a patch for fixing all the modded weapons that are ruining the game very well could take a long time to go through. Who really knows who's to blame for that. Also, with the exception of the non-functioning skills, the game didn't really have any game-breaking bugs... not that I every came across, anyways. Many issues were already fixed, and what's left is pretty minor. Every game has its bugs. They will get fixed eventually.
Saying that Borderlands is not a high-quality product is simply not true, not to mention unfair to the GBX employees that spent several years working on it. It's also unfair to compare them to Infinity Ward. The Call of the Duty games are much, much smaller than Borderlands, with fewer things to keep track of. I wouldn't think it would be as hard to create a highly polished 5-6 hour campaign with mostly scripted events compared to a big open world game that lasts many hours, with a lot of random elements thrown in and a lot of different systems that work together. Plus "high-quality" is probably the last thing I would call MW2's multiplayer.
Gearbox definitely listens to their customer-base. Their main issue is acting on it quicker than they do. Many things from the DLC have even come from things that their customers ask for. Borderlands also did have a lot of playtesting. How the game still got shipped without having many of it's technical issues worked out is beyond me. However, the game definitely wasn't broken upon release. Borderlands has been out for a mere 4 months, which is not a very long time for a game's lifespan. It's not as if they did nothing about the game's problems at all. If 10 to 12 months goes by after the game's release without having all current issues resolved, then you have more of an argument, but right now, I think you're blowing this way out of proportion.
.
If anyone remembers me, I was an active member prerelease who said he'd return when he beat the game.
I have not been able to.
Hourly crashes of the game have, to do, all but killed my interest in attempting to play the game.
2 "Minor" patches, and 2 DLC's later, and nothing on the horizon for fixing it.
I have tried a half a dozen guides on a dozen ways to fix my issue, with no help at all.
I'd gladly jump on the new DLC's were I able to even beat the original.
-.- Here's me chiming in with my very upset report on a game I thought was great.

What I am posting is a matter strictly of my opinion only, as the perception of a consumer and customer. Product quality is a big thing these days, and gaged to current customer expectations and best business practices. Mine is the voice of an unbiased gamer who uses Gearbox's product.
I am not going to defend or argue against any points you have made, you are entitled to your opinions. Based on my perception of the facts and what I know about a considerable sample of persons who own the game, I present my arguments. Feel free to argue for or against my viewpoint, I am not starting any movement to ostracize or condemn Gearbox, this is not my point..
Ps: I own the game and both released DLC packs....
Nice little opinion piece, Terminal. It's good to have relevant content like this around here.
I'll say that I personally take the stance that Borderlands is what it is without too much fuss. It's a game, and there will probably be a better sequel. Now, you might say that I've been lulled into the average-quality consumerism- but I'd disagree in saying again, it is what it is. There are other hills to die on, and this isn't one of them.
I have not encountered a single glitch since launch, I bought it the day it came out, bought both DLC's the day they came out, and played it for the majority of the last 4 months.
You say they need to stop modding, but theres nothing they really can do about it, all characters are saved on the players console and can be tampered with as the user sees fit. They might be able to heavily enforce bans on modders, but since they really can't see the modding without being in the game with the modder, they would have to rely on player complains, which may lead to people ganging up on others to get their accounts banned.

I agree with you completely. Game developers shouldn't take several months to fix problems in their products.
As I have yet to run into any problems other than the beginning glitch, (where the cl4p-tp won't say his line and you can't open the doc's shed at the beginning of the game, and they fixed that pretty early) I haven't had any real problems with the developers. I do know that there are severe glitches that can cripple players games and ruin hundreds of hours of playtime, and I agree that Gearbox has fallen behind on the patch progress. They need to step up their customer support,
