Best FPS-RPG Hybrids?
Update: Check out our list of the 7 Best RPG Shooters here.
I want to write an article for Borderlands Guide on the best first-person shooters with role playing game elements. I think the list would be interesting to see what the popular games in this genre did correctly and how that stacks up with Borderlands.
Games like Bioshock and Deus Ex immediately come to mind. Any thoughts on what FPS/RPG titles should be included on this list? Thanks for the help.
Update - a list of titles suggested
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Fallout 3
Hellgate London
Mass Effect
Neocron
PlanetSide
Stalker
System Shock
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Welcome to the site and thanks for the suggestion. Just read up about the game on Wikipedia and it seems like a perfect canditate for the list. An FPS-RPG with relative critical and commercial success. I'm going to research it some more.
Thanks for the Welcome BG. I assume you're the admin around here then. Great site. Looking forward to the release of the game and interacting with all of you. Will you keep the site up after release??
That's the plan.
Fallout 3, Mass effect, Hellgate london (for the most part anyways), gunz... Um, probably more I can't think of right now.
Mmm, there's a bunch of warcraft III mods and stuff for counterstrike and other valve multiplayer games. I suspect that probably holds true of any major multiplayer game that allows gameplay modification. They tend to not be nearly as popular as the generic game types.
[edit] if you're going back as far as dues ex, most people who played systemshock before bioshock still claim it's a better game.
I'm going to add all the suggestions I get to the first post in this thread so people can easily see them.
And what exactly is Gunz? Hadn't heard of that one before.
Korean MMO game with swords and guns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunz
[edit] It might also be worth mentioning the Might of Magic series. Fundimentally those games were RPGS. They took place in a fantasy universe with dragons orks and elfs, but they were in the first person perspective and they did have real time combat. Excellent games in the history of gaming anyways, and somewhat of an inspiration point for the more modern FPSRPGS. That being said, the outright lack of anything that could be described as a firearm was a major difference, it totally changed the way the game played and felt, as you were either casting slow moving magic bolts, shooting weak and slow bow and arrows, or getting up close to deal heavy damage with melee weapons. It wasn't really a shooter in any sense of the word.
Fallout 3. It's amazing in my opinion. Gunz is good too. I saw people playing it, but I didn't see much of the RPG side of it.
Not to burst anyones bubble, but Gunz is 3rd person, therfore does not make the FPS criteria, other then that it is missing some key RPG elements like a storyline. I have plyaed it though and it is a fairly decent game, even with these flaws.
BioShock was a master peice, and I am eagerly anticipating BioShock 2. Also, technically Call of Duty Modern Warfare and World at War are both FPS RPG's due to the ability to customize classes to your liking and the the ability to level up. Admittedly the RPD elements are not deep, but none the less, they are present

What about the Stalker series??? They had both the FPS and the RPGish rolled into one. Either way they were both excellent games. Even better after the modders got the claws into them.
