Best RPG-Shooter Vote: Should BF2142 and COD4 Be Included?
This site is going to hold a vote to determine the best published RPG-shooter (sorry Borderlands.) Should BF2142 and COD4 be included? They definitely have RPG elements but do you think they have enough or is it just a slapped-on afterthought.
You can see the original discussion for nominees here. Note that I've changed the wording from best RPG-FPS to best RPG-shooters. I want to be able to include third-person shooters like Too Human.
A list of nominees we have so far (in alphabetical order):
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Fallout 3
Gunz
Hellgate London
Mass Effect
Neocron
PlanetSide
Stalker
System Shock
Too Human
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Yes, recommendations are certainly welcome here. I don't want to miss anything that should be included.
2142 and CoD4 are flat-out shooters. Sure, you level up and get new "skills", but that doesn't make it an RPG. Would you call LoZ an RPG? Also, Planetside is an MMOFPS, not an MMORPGFPS, or whatever acronym they have for that. Think 2,500-man BF2 servers.
Unless somebody convinces me otherwise, 2142 and COD4 are out.
Thinking of including Planetside though still. Sounds like the game has a pretty robust experience system. From Wikipedia:
While a first person shooter at heart, PlanetSide does have an experience/leveling system. Earned experience is divided into three categories: Battle Experience, Support Experience, and Command Experience. Battle Experience is gained from elimination of enemy soldiers, the capture of base facilities, and exploring and interacting with the game world. Support Experience is earned through "Assist" kills: after aiding another player, the first player gains a percentage of experience the other player gains through kills. Command Experience is gained from leading a squad or platoon in a successful base capture. Functionally, Battle Experience and Support Experience are identical, both contributing towards Battle Rank, which leads to benefits such as the ability to use different equipment, implants, or appearance upgrades. Accumulated Command Experience lets the player use several team-oriented abilities. Currently, the maximum Battle Rank is set to 25, while the maximum Command Rank is set to 5.Each Battle Rank gives you a certification point which can then be spent on certifications, while each Command Rank unlocks a special ability accessed via an item called a "Command Uplink Device (CUD)". Certifications can be used to unlock new weapons or vehicles you can use on the battlefield, thus enhancing a character's flexibility.
Thoughts?
A role-playing game is a computer or video game where the player controls one or several characters, and achieves victory by completing a series of quests. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat.
Many games are borrowing elements from the RPG genre. They are not RPGs.
The only thing thnat really keeps COD 4 from being a TRUE Rpg is the lack of the ability to create your own character. The game has the experience and leveling systems in place, getting new weaponry and abilities through said leveling, and you can even loot your enemies to make yourself more powerful. Also you can create different classes and mold your arsenal to maximize your abilites. You can't really deny that COD 4 has RPG elements.
That's like saying that an Adventure or Platforming title is an RPG. Yes, it borrows elements. No, it is not an RPG.
I'm going to start the voting soon.
Unless anybody wants to try to argue it back on.
True, it isnt an RPG, it has RPG elements. Mass Effect is a RPG with guns, COD 4 is a FPS RPG.......focus on the shooting (like Borderlands) then throw in some RPG goodness to spice things up.

It had some rpg elements like leveing up, and a story line, the leveling up would be more health and more members to follow you along. sorry if this isn't a recommendation thread, I didn't see anything saying not to throw in a recommendation. It would def. get my vote, it's old but really good. Also, i felt as though COD4 didn't have enough rpg elements
