Borderlands by the Numbers
We've gotten so much information about Borderlands over the past month, it can be hard to keep track of what we know. Let's break it down by the numbers.
4
The number of playable characters in Borderlands. There's a different character to fit all manners of playstyle. Here they are:
The Tank: His name is fittingly Brick. We don’t know his story yet, but he serves as the brute force of the group.
The Soldier: Roland is a more balanced fighter. He’s basically a weak, fast, Brick. He’s looking for a man he swore to kill and who is ironically the leader of the bandits.
The Sniper: Mordecai is support character. He stays back at a long range and picks off baddies while his friends are down there punching them in the face. He is looking for someone from his past that is apparently dead, but he wants to find the body and see what he was carrying. Partway through the game, he befriends an alien called a Bloodwing. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds cool. : )
The Mage: Lilith is a Siren. This means that she has magical powers, (like disappearing), that she can use in combat. She is looking for another Siren that is supposed to be on Pandora so she can learn more about herself.
12
The number of vehicles in the game. (http://www.videogamemedia.com/articles/previews/3012). Recently, we learned that there are about 12 vehicles in the game. So far, I’ve seen 2. The Salt Racer that was back in the Game Informer article of September 2007 and some pink car. Ths Salt Racer was designed by an artist who designed stuff for Alien and Indiana Jones. Basically, at slow speeds, it spreads it wheels out to maneuver better. However, at high speeds, it brings them in to become a dragser.

The day in October that Borderlands comes out.

The day in October I'm going to have to call out sick at school after playing Borderlands all night. : )
44
The number of guns we've currently gathered from the game for the Gunopedia. Goal: 17 million, (yeah, we’ve got a LONG ways to go, so post your findings!!!).
7,850
This is my estimate on the size of the game map in square miles. A while ago, we heard that it would take about one hour to drive across the wasteland in a vehicle. Non-stop. Let’s say you drive an average of 100 miles per hour over the salt flats, (this is just speculation. I don’t know how fast the vehicles are yet.). That means that if the map is a circle, it has a diameter of 100 miles. Now, we take the area of a circle:
Area=pi*radius^2
Since the circle has a d of 100 miles, it has an r of 50 miles. Now, let’s plug it all in.
Area=3.14*(50 miles)^2
Area=7,850 square miles (12,633 square kilometers)
In the real world, that’s a bit bigger than Connecticut. In the video game world, it’s gigantic.
*UPDATE*: Based on some more recent interviews than the one I listed above, the world is actually bigger than this. How much bigger? I don't know.
10,000
The number of vehicle weapons or turrets. Keep in mind though we heard this number way back in the Game Informer article of September 2007, the count was at 10,000. But, we haven’t heard since… If it increases at the same rate as the guns did, we would have hundreds of thousands right now.
500,000
The number of pieces of armor (unfortunately, this is an old GI September 2007 number too). One thing to note, armor won't affect your appearance but it will affect how much damage you can take.
17,750,000
The latest count of the number of guns in Borderlands. A lot? You bet. Gearbox uses a process called procedural generation to generate the massive amount of firepower.
Procedural generations spits out novel guns by mixing different scopes, stocks, grips, barrels, and magazines/cylinders.
There are others, but they are not on all weapons. Because there are 5 pieces to a weapon, there are a minimum of 28 types of each category.
28^5≈15,000,000
This shows that the weapons will be extremely variable, unlike some people thought.
Props to BG for some great editing as well! It certainly wouldn't be this good without it. And now props for the awesome pics. : )
man, im impressed, well written, and nicely done. you said you're going for game critic? then i can easily say i think you have a future there. (if not, well take it as a compliment anyways haha) but yea, great article, and thanks for the info :)
Game critic huh? Interesting. I'm just a 16 year-old High School student. I've got time. Lol. No, actually I was thinking more along the lines of robotics. : ) But who knows? Maybe I'll put this on my job applications!
well hey, it was pretty well written, i was in a journalism class back when i was in high school. but i thought on a previous thread you had said that you wanted to be a critic? oh well. robotics is cool too man, you mean like electrical engineering? cause i have a friend who is going into that field. see me, i love videogames a ton, but the journalism part idk about, so im going into personal training, im gonna be realllly fit hopefully haha
I like the way you explained how you speculated some of those numbers. It will be interesting to see if they come close to the mark.
Hopefully the coverage during the quakecon press weekend will reveal some more juicy info. :)
The latest count of the number of guns in Borderlands. the trailer said 87 bazillion... =(17,750,000
Nope. That wasn't me. But yes. Electrical engineering is correct. : )
Don't be. 4.9 bazillion == 1 million. ; ) They got it right.
LMAO.

Nicely done! Its truely amazing, like the connecticut fact, and the size of the world. I competely forgot about the 1 hour drive thing. And since its supposed to be randomly generated terrain its sure to never get old. Again great job!
