borderlands save modding

hi, can anyone help me, I've got a european version of borderlands (PS3) with a level 61 hunter and can modify anything on the save file using willowtree but I've also got the japanese GOTY edition but can't copy the save into willowtree to modify it, its a level 4 soldier with around 7 missions done could the reason be that I'm not far enough in the game or is the japanese save file not compatible with willowtree?
any help would be appreciated thanks
It's most likely the format, since it's possible to start moddinng your character between the time you get off the bus and get your HUD.
