The Borderlands Skill Distribution System
We've heard many many times that Borderlands is Diablo meets Mad Max. The Mad Max angle is easy to see, but we haven't gotten a ton of info about the Diablo angle. How do characters level up and what skills can they improve?
Here's a sneak peak. One of the Borderlands preview videos shows the game's "Skill Distribution System" for a split second. (Thanks to Shooluth for pointing this out). I grabbed some video stills and that's what you see here.

The character activated the system through a computer terminal. It looks like these are located througout the game. The player scrolls through different categories of skills. He can activate one skill for each category.

The character accessing the system was Roland. We've been told before that the different characters have unique traits. The above pic looks like Roland's unique category, a section called "Roland Focus."

Some of the skills say "Currently offline." I'm guessing that means you can unlock new skills as the game progresses.

Choosing the right skill for the situation can be crucial. Here you can choose between faster reloads and better accuracy.
Hey Leonhart, nice to hear from you again.
Wow, this is the first good look we've got at the RPG side of the game. I bet the mage's skill set will be awesome. Fire balls and stuff?
From what they said in the GI article it sounded like Lilith was more of a support mage, focusing more on buffs and helping/healing as opposed to fireballs and offensive things like that.
Also while taking yet another look at the GI article pictures I came across this which seemed fairly interesting to me.

Looks to me like this guy is in "Last Stand" from Call of Duty. So I'm curious, if you take too much damage you may not die immediately but will still have to be "revived" after so much time. Kind of like Army of Two, Gears of War 2, other games which I know exist but I can't think of right now. Now he's holding his pistol there, I'm also wondering are you going to be limited to the pistol when in this situation (like CoD4) or can you use your current weapon (Army of Two).

So we have Physique, Wepaons, Gear, and each character specific field, but what about the last category? Has that one been discovered or revealed at all yet? Or does anyone have any ideas? I'd think something related to vehicle proficiency, based on others, but can't really think of any other options.
Furthermore, if these are the skills then where are the three branching skill paths for each character?
From the symbol it looks like team buffs and if you look closely you can kinda read that stockpile has something to do with boosting yours and allies something or other.
Yeah, I would agree by the picture and two of the skills, it seems to be a party buff area. And since they said they took some things from WoW, I'd say its a good chance to be just that. Seems the benefits of playing co-op are getting better and better.
:D
There is a system where if you take too much damage you will enter a state (shall we say) where you have to "Fight for Your Life", I am guessing like a mix between Gears of War 2's Bleeding Out and Call of Duty 4's Last Stand.
From what I saw of the FFYL, it looked a lot like Left 4 Dead's system. I also seem to recall that if you take down the enemy while in this state, you get back up, is this true?
I read in an interview with Randy that if you kill the enemy that put you into the last stand mode youll get a 'second wind' as he calls it and get right back in the fight without having to be revived. Seems pretty cool to me.

Good catch Shooluth. I didn't notice how much it actually showed on the vid. This clears the game up a little.
