Drawbacks of PVP Multiplayer
Reading a bit on the forums here and Gearbox's, it's obv. that a buncha people would like to player versus player multiplayer. Like deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag or something else.
So my question is: why wouldn't Gearbox put this feature in the game? Seems like easy decision. It will make more people want to buy the game, right?
The only thing I can think of, is that it's a question of resources. To make multiplayer like that, it costs money, developers, hours and so on.
There is also the issue of balance. I mean what's the point of playing single player and having an obnoxious amount of guns in it if you can't use them in MP? And that is where we bring in the issue of balance. If someone finds one of the uber-awesome guns of doom and then brings that into MP they'll be unstoppable for a short time. If they have set guns on the "maps" for MP then people will endlessly bitch and moan about not being able to use theirs.

I hadn't really thought of that. I guess that PvP multiplayer couldn't offer the persistant characters that are a selling point of the game.
In response to the balance issue, like in World of Warcraft, they can put level brackets on matches, because obviously a higher lvl character is gonna have access to exponentially greater equipment then a lowbie, that way there is no true OP person, just good drops and we can all still use the characters we've put so much effort into. With any luck, after the game comes out, maybe a patch will hit PSN and XBL in the form of PVP content.
PVP exerpt found on Shacknews about Borderlands
Shack: What is Borderlands going to look like after it ships? Will there be add-on content?
Randy Pitchford: Probably. I mean we'll see. You plan so that you can, and you know some things you want to do. And we also want to see what people want. If the world says, "Add more quests." That might be where we focus. If the world says, "Actually that's fine dude, but I need arenas, let's do some PvP." We kind of need to give ourselves some flexibility to kind of see where we all want to go.
Heres a link to the full article.
i think that besides the fact of costs and time and resources and all that jazz, they probably are afraid of balance issues at the moment, but if enough people ask for a pvp arena thing, im certain it would comin DLC. They have taken the best from games throughout history (i.e. diablo, WoW, every FPS etc...) and there is nothing wrong with looking at another game. Guild wars was able to do the Arena thing pretty well, maybe take a look at that. There are tons of possibilities for this game to go places, we just need to make sure they hear what we want to see in the game.
happy gaming :)
There already is a PvP arena system.
I think I remember a while back reading an interview from the guy who made The Darkness, talking about how many people complain that they want multiplayer in a game, and that he says it really takes a lot of resources to do, which is why on one of the games he was working on, kept it single player only, as he said something like wanting a decent singler player experience rather than mediocre single and multiplayer.
multiplayer would be cool, especially when there are two bricks berserking each others. that brings a question, can you play with, lets say, 2 mordecai and 2 roland in coop campaign?????????????????
Yes....you can....

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The biggest holdup about adding versus multiplayer is probably the resources that it will require.
Gearbox is already running behind schedule with the game. They're eager to get Borderlands on shelves.
