Gunslinger: Mordecai's Close Combat Tree? Roland: Machine Gunner?
Just thinking about some stuff... Tell me what you think.
1. Mordecai's Gunslinger Tree is his close combat tree. Though mainly a sniper, you can actually spec and gear Mordecai so he can get up close and personal like Lilith and Brick.
- The Gunslinger tree is mainly about pistols, with a single skill dedicated to his sword: Lethal Strikes.
- Pistols are a close quarter battle weapon, compact enough for shooting point blank in the roughest melee.
- The Clipper, a repeater pistol, gives a melee bonus.
- The newly revealed Legendary Weapon, Bloody Unforgiven, gives a large bonus to melee combat. It also has a capacity of just 2; while you'll be making solid, accurate shots with it, you'll probably be swinging your sword and pistol whipping foes with it.
- I think we'll be seeing a lot more other pistols with melee bonuses on them.
2. Roland is a machine gunner. Brick may be an expert in rockets and explosive weapons, but he's not the only heavy weapons guy among the four vault hunters (and I'm not talking about his Scorpio Turret).
- The gun types in Borderlands are as follows: shotguns, combat rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, revolvers, repeater pistols, and (rocket) launchers.
- This got me to wondering: where are the infantry machine guns? I'm talking about guns like John Rambo's trademark M60 machine gun, the Browning Automatic Rifle (M1918), and other light support weapons (once again, I am not talking about the Scorpio Turret).
- With 87 bazillion guns in the game and other games including such weapons in their roster, it's likely that such guns are in Borderlands. If so, they're classified under one of the game's gun types. Combat Rifles is the most logical.
- Roland speciales in Combat Rifles, which puts anything like Rambo's gun in his hands... Which makes sense because Roland is the Soldier of the group.
Brick's character viginette shows him going to town on a SAW type weapon. Hope theres alot of LMGs to be found.
The Gunslinger mod that my Hunter, "Wally Maloo", has doesn't have any Lethal Strike in it. His Assassin mod has that. In fact, for some reason, his Gunslinger has Loaded instead of Hair Trigger like it should. It also has Deadly and Relentless, along with a bonus to Pistol Fire Rate and Pistol Ammo Regeneration. But why the hell would they put Loaded in it, instead of the Sniper mod where it belongs, and instead of Hair Trigger?? My Sniper mod has Focus and Caliber, as it should, but also for some reason has Carrion Call instead of something more appropriate, like Deadly or Loaded. I suppose, though, that Carrion Call helps when that distant target becomes a lot less distant, as happens so often.
I would make the mods as follows:
Gunslinger: Gun Crazy, Hair Trigger, and I suppose Lethal Strike for all the pistols with blades, though Relentless works. But Riotous Remedy would help in those close combats, and Predator would really come in handy for avoiding being overwhelmed (especially if you built up Bird of Prey.)
Sniper: Focus and Caliber as it is, but certainly Loaded would be great, as well as Deadly for all the headshots you do with those nice, aimed KRAKs!
Some skills, such as Hair Trigger and Smirk, simply have no mod boosts (not that I care about the latter.) I understand that the previously unmodded Gun Crazy has been added to DLC3 gear, in the Gunfighter class mod. That apparently also has Deadly, again, and Focus for some reason. Not that the accuracy bump isn't helpful, but I'd rather have a skill that fully helps pistoleros.
I would make many or most of the class mods differently. I dunno what Gearbox was thinking when they built a lot of them. I would at least increase the range of skills that class mods can randomly pick from, instead of a set three skills per mod. I'd still max three skills plus the two bonuses, though. ... At least until the window displaying the data is either larger, or can scroll info. =)

Haha, I noticed that about Mordi. Which got me excited, because he is going to be my second behind Lilth, but nice observation about the machine guns and Roland!
