this whole time, i was under the impression that the number of guns was around one million, but this article that i found says otherwise...

The official count is close
The official count is close to 18 million, actually. Last I saw it was 17,750,000.

That says gun and equipment
That says gun and equipment though meaning armor and grenades added to the gun count as well

Melee
I know that there will be lots and lots of guns and stuff but like in fallout 3 i loved to use guns but the melee weapons were sweet too so if anyone knows anything about if there will be melee weapons let me know

Yes it's an astounding number. But why does the jump between 1 million and 3 million and the such startle you guys?
If theres 1 million, and you add a new effect to the game that doubles the combination total to 2 million.
Now lets say we start with..ohhh I dunno 650,000? And we add on 10 new effects, like maybe rats come out of their corpses or it sends them flying with gravitational bullets.
Assuming none of these features are exclusive from other abilities (I.e. they could be prseent or absent on any of the other 650,000 guns) That would bring the total amount of combinations up to 665,600,000
665 MILLION for 10 NEW effects.
i.e. Yes, that can really be the number. They're not designing it. They just feed information into the AI and it generates the stuff. All they have to do is design effects, abilities, what have you, and toss them into the machine. Not that impressive after a certain point.
