Horrible Timing

With the release of Borderlands creeping closer and closer I was finding it harder and harder to contain my excitement about finally getting my hands on this game.  I finally put enough money aside to make sure I could get the game on release day.  I flipped on my xbox to find something to waste a little time with and help with the agonizing wait for the 20th when it happened.

My xbox screen turned a lovely shade of pink and purple.  Thinking my HDMI cable was loose I turned off the console, adjusted the cable, and turned it back on.  This time it started up with pink and purple colors then went blank followed shortly by a red light on the bottom right quadrant of the xbox light ring.   I quickly turned off the machine trying to convince myself that I imagined seeing it.  After spending the night trying to forget about it I woke up in the morning and turned on the xbox.  Everything seemed to be working.  There was no red light, it recognized the controller only there was no picture or sound.

After trying all of the troubleshooting tips from the xbox support website and switching from HDMI to component cables the best I could manage was to get sound with no video using the component cables.  Today I finally gave in and I'm sending it back to Microsoft to get it fixed.  Since my warranty is expired I'm stuck with a $105 repair bill, which will be paid mostly with the money I set aside to buy Borderlands, and a month of waiting for the console back which pretty much ensures that I won't be playing this day 1.

I've never been this excited for a game before and can't imagine much worse of a time for my xbox to give out on me.

My 360 is performing

My 360 is performing splendidly. I have a Nyko fan (the one with it's own adapter) hooked up to the back of the 360. Apparently it void warrenty, but it can't hurt to try lying about it. Only problem is my crap TV. It's screen goes all green and purple and starts basically flipping out in bright colored areas (rendering Megaman 9 unplayable as you can't see what you're doing). At times it stops reading the HDMI input, and I have to reboot the TV by unplugging the power cable. Such a baad TV. >_> When all of this happens, I thought it was my 360.

And I agree. There's nothing worse than a console breaking down near your favorite game release. Since it is the 360, it's a death you see coming. It's real unfortunate. Best of luck, dood.

Red ring of death

That is the RED RING OF DEATH, happens sometimes. Microsoft knew it could happen to the consols, they just didn't do anything to fix it. You have to send it back and they should give one back, the problem is, the one you will receive is a broken one too.

Think of it as the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH but for the xbox 360.

lol, it was funny, when i read this post, The ad banner at top said, "xbox need fixing? do you have red rings?". Well my xbox had red rings a little while ago, and i was pissed because i had to send it in and i thought it was going to cost a lot of money, but then i found out that if it has 3 red rings, microsoft gives it an automatic 3 year warranty and just my luck i had 3 red rings. They fixed it completely free and sent me a free 1 month card. now if i get red rings (as long as theres 3) within the next year, theyll fix it for free.

I had the same thing as

I had the same thing as Purplepunk happen. There are different things that the quadrant lights indicate for something going wrong with a box and the actual "Red Ring of Death" is the certain 3 quadrants lit up with the red ring. Luckily mine happened over the summer and i got it back within 20 days of sending. Well I received a completely new box, the 1 mo. free card and the extended 1 year warranty, which actually covers more than just the 3 red rings if you read through it. As far as that particular problem goes they've done well in remedying it after the fact. Also, the new consoles that ship back to 360 owners with Ring of Death problems won't break again as they've been refitted with with a new motherboard and a cooler-running GPU. If the problem you had Kugby12 wasn't the top left 3 quadrants then it's not the "Red Ring of Death." Otherwise your warranty would have been extended by 3 years and the box would've been fixed for free. Bad luck man...there are contests out there for free copies of the game on borderlandsforums.com and maybe some other places. Hope your luck turns around.

i think the three red

i think the three red quadrent thing is called an E74 error or something and that basically means something came loose in your xbox, its usually the pins in your Ethernet port, one breaks loose and you get three rings. and is totally covered by the warrenty

still hope

Well I sent the console in on Wednesday and it looks like it's already been recieved and repairs have started.  Hopefully that means they're actually fixing it and it's not sitting in pile of broken xbox's waiting it's turn.  For now I'm gonna hang on to my delusions that my console might get fixed and sent back to me by the 20th.

On a funny and kinda sad side note.  When I took my console to the UPS store to be packed and sent the lady told me I had the 3rd xbox she had seen that day (this was around noon) and while I was waiting someone else brought another xbox in to be shipped out.
