Joining an up-level player's game deletes my character

I joined a friend's game, we were both at level 26 but he had completed a few missions in new haven that I hadnt, so when I was joining, the game said something about not being allowed to join his game since he was kinda ahead of me, but it let me anyways, except it deleted my character and replaced it with a brand new character at level 1.
I tried exiting the game and starting over to get my character loaded, but no such luck - my original character was gone.
Any way to bring him back to life?

That is sad--I wonder what happened here. Was it because you joined a game where the host was more advanced? i wonder if anyone on this group can give some insight on this? I would like to try to play with others but am at lvl 50 and would not like to lose my character.

curious manubumb, on which console did this crime happen?! hopefully it's not a new glitch on the rise.

Thats so sad I almost want to kry...What lvl were you!? I almost duwanna play online now!!! If I lost my hunter I would probably stop playing all together I put all that work into him... :(
