Let’s Discuss A Borderlands Guide Gun Trading Area
Borderlands has a ton of items. Each player is going to find different ones. Inevitably, gun and item transactions will follow.
This site is aimed at assisting the Borderlands community. That manifests itself by providing relevant news on the front page, offering a place to chat on the forums and info about guns in the Gunopedia. A place to help players trade their guns would be a natural extension of this.
Rockabilly Rocket already began discussing the idea here and I would like to keep the conversation going. I think at this point its a little early to roll anything out—after all, we can’t trade anything until the game comes out—but I’m curious to hear people’s idea.
What would you like to see in an online item-trading system?
Would it be possible to give each user of the website a section on there profile to add weaponry that could be searched from a certain section of the BG website?
This would then keep the length of the forum posts down and allow people to add and remove weaponry easier than tacking posts onto then end of threads.
Ideally it would be a section for "Sale and Trade" then people can add and remove the items as the come and go, a bit like a player run store if you like.
You could then have a standard page on the website where people can search or browse the weaponry available. Maybe add the options to search by certain criterior such as Damage, Weapom Type, Special Effectes e.t.c. You should then be able to break them down to platform and then add rare weapons.
In the beginning nobody will know which weapons they will be looking for so searchng by name may be a little redundant. Being able to search by weapon class thenapplying filters to those results for the desired stats would make things a hell of a lot easier.
Ideally there would be a set list of weapons complete with stats before game release so that we all know what we are looking for but this being Borderlands, and everything being procedurally generated along with the staggering number of items, it kind of rules this option out. As such the ability to add all of the details to your own "Store/Sale/Trade" page would allow for better searching and item locating.
I think a page for each user being self managed with a good search function and wide array of filter options would be the easiest option. Add the ability to browse users/friends/favourite users and add users as friends would make the whole idea easier. Plus this would just be an extention to the user profile which is already in place along with the gamertags/ID's functionality you have already built.
Would this be possible?
Sorry about the rant, just hit me as I thought about it! If it doesn't make sense just let me know and I will attempt to has some kind of visual representation together....
I would highly appreciate That one if doable.
Wow, I think I may be getting a bit too excited by this idea now....May need to calm myself down!
It would be a brilliant facility to have given the possibilities the game gives. Has there been any kind of information surrounding the options of trade in the game?
Could do with knowing the currency being used and if you are able to sell items to other players or if it is just a trade item option.
I think that having a filters for guns then having filters for highest rof, damage or reload speed and then a listed cost or trade value or you could try something like Ebay where its auction like if that is at all possible.
I have been pushing this on the official borderlands site and have also mentioned a way to bet guns in a type of duel option. That idea is a little more for the develpoers. I was wondering how this would work for console gamers (like myself) when the guns would be traded off this site?
I like all these ideas. I think the easiest place to picture the best posible thing for the "Store" (if you will) will be if you study the World Of Warcraft Auction house, i think this is the best representitive of this idea. ;)
@GM. I like your idea GM. There are certainly elements there that I would like to implement and believe I could on this Web site. It would be a nice feature if you post a gun on BorderlandsGuide.com, the weapon also shows up on your profile page.
A search function would also be helpful. A player might want to find a gun with an electrical effect and a damage greater than x.
@mbrem8. How would it work? To be honest, I'm not sure how exactly the Borderlands trading mechanism works, just that the game permits it. Here's my guess.
If you organize a trade on this site, you also then need to arrange an in-game meeting of your characters. You actually exchange the weapons at that meeting.
Writing that made me think of another feature that would probably be useful in a trading system. Some sort of user feedback so you can say this was a good (or lousy) trading partner.
@Dead_Eye. Checking out that site now. Thanks for the suggestions. If anybody else has any good examples of this they suggest taking a look at, please let me know.
There is infact a monetary system in place in game. The currency is called "credits".
@Rock - Thanks for confirming this, I handn't been aware that selling items in BL was possible, thanks! Although the more I think about it, the more I think it would have to be present for the game to work.
@BG - Glad you like the idea, think it would be the easiest way to impliment it rather than handling a sales system in a forum thread. I can forsee it getting messy with perople wandering off topic.
Another addition I have thought of would be linking the Gunopedia to the Store of each BG user. You could then have an icon appear on weaponry in the Gunopedia to show if a user has that item for sale. You could then have the icon link back to the users profile so that a meet can be arranged for trade or sale. Could be a tough one to impliment though dependant on the common information that would link the two values.
Moving forward from my original idea, you could test this by adding a set of text input fields to each users profile page when they view it themselves so that the user can add the name + rest of the values of the weapon they wish to sell. The user then submits this and it is added to a list of say 10 max sale items either on their profile or on a universal store page.
Just checking over the Gunopedia now looks like there would need to be 6 firleds required per item (excluding armor e.t.c.) unless you would need a seperate field for manufacturer which would make it 7.

However, divide it by platofrms, and by gun type, in my opinion. Cause if you're Lilith, you can just head to the SMG or Pistol section. In there, have a rule the thread must be the gun's full name.
Yeah sounds cool!
