Melee Weapons In Borderlands

Guns aren’t always the answer; sometimes melee weapons are.
Since we created the Gunopedia, we’ve been talking so much about the firearms of Borderlands that we’ve overlooked melee weapons. There could be a lot too. Gearbox is using procedural generation to create them, just like they are with the many projectile armaments.
"Every single weapon is procedurally generated," said Borderlands producer Simon Hurley to CVG. "Weapons are cobbled together from different pieces of technology, so you can have a melee weapon that's a cross between a meat cleaver and a chainsaw.”
This raises some questions. How useful will a melee weapon be in a game with so many guns? Will they have their own set of ratings? And doesn’t the one in the picture above look like a combination of a pizza slicer and a pickaxe?
Also mentioned is a "Rain Grenade".
Randy hurls a Rain Grenade into a pack
of enemies, who scatter like birds fleeing a predator. But to no avail.
The grenade spits out a series of explosions and incinerates all nearby
foes, who dance death jigs as they burn.
Nice article. I hadn't seen that one before.
...that weapon in the pic was compared to a buzzsaw on a stick. Also, that rain grenade sounds disturbing. Death jigs???
Could the rain grenade be another term for the MIRV grenade we discussed here? They sound similar. Both split apart to create multiple explosions.
And death jigs are a possible side effect of both.
Its so hard to differentiate the grenades because which are just regular grenades that do one thing, and which fall under the protean umbrella, ella.....ella.....ey. ahem.
Wonder how melee will be handled. Presumably it's not a hotkey melee strike like we saw in halo/others... but weather melee is a secondary weapons slot or what... Same basic question applies to grenades. Expecially for nades it'd be nice to have a small inventory you can select from at a 1 or 2 keystroke hotkey.
wonder if you could sneak up on enemys and dismember them with the melee weapons..... that would be an entertaining use. or like in the picture they could be a tool of intimidation that only mooks use to try to scare you before you blow their head off with a shotgun
Interesting idea Toast. A lot of games ignore the advantages of attacking somebody from the rear.
Two games off the top of my head that did address this. One is Team Fortress 2. The thief class can "backstab" somebody from behind and take them out with one swing. Drake's Uncharted also has something similiar.
thank you for putting all the time and effort into the site and the welcome
I've messed around with Web sites before but this is the first time I've done something of this scope. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
Hopefully the site will keep providing useful info, the community will continue to grow and--of course--the game Borderlands will actually turn out to be pretty good, haha.

I don't know whether to order a slice of pizza from that guy or shoot him.
