missing main quest

I was invited by a couple of friends last night to help finish the main part of the game on play through.  The guy I joined didnt have any of the main quest. I took him to each part of the game and it wasnt there at all. when I looked at the lobby it said he was fresh offa the bus, but he could go all the way to rust commons east and west, and new haven. in his quest log there was no main quest also. Any suggestions?
