This is my first playthrough of Borderlands. Should I go through a pistol centered build with Mordecai or a sniper build? Or maybe a combination of both?

I use my Genocide Rifle
I use my Genocide Rifle most....then its my repeater....then my revolver....then my Sniper if i need it....i actually rarely use my smgs

for a good pistol set i would go with this.

Here's a route I always take. It provides a lot of cash to keep ammo and meds stocked, bonus damage and health refills to keep you alive, and generally works well as an all around setup.

You can change up the order you do it in, but I recommend focusing on the central route since it provides the most health and cash, and once you get Bird of Prey, you can massively boost health regen. And COMs can further increase the number of attacks and turn that branch into a complete gamebreaker when using the explosive element.

I would suggest the pistol/revovler route, both types use the pistol profreciency skill, but you do need the sniper part to, kinda 60/40 split 60 being revolver/pistol, there are skills that increase xp and damage on snipers and pistols, those are where you want to put a good chunk of skill points, and you dont want to forget your bloodwing, it helps alot, dropping money and loot, helps with buying ammo and guns(unless your finding better guns, which is usually the case) anyways, there are a few ways of going about it with the way you want to play. last thing would be to look at all the skill upgrades and go through what really needs to be upgraded.
