Overplayed Characters?

First off I wanna say hello to everyone.  I've been visiting a while now and wanted to provide a little input.

One thing that's been bugging me since I saw the list of characters is that some are going to be played too much, and some aren't going to be played enough.  Also: Will we have our choice all the time?  Can we play a game with four Mordecais? Because, personally, I see that happening a lot.  I don't want to enter a game and go "Crap, looks like I have to play Brick this time."

One thing I've noticed in a lot of games is that EVERYONE wants to be a sniper, it's just "so cool", and I have to say that in this case, I agree.  If I were going to Pandora, I'd probably want a nice sturdy long range hunting rifle, with a nice pistol as a sidearm, plus a good sword or knife.  That, and I usually end up being a damn good sniper (besides in Call of Duty 4.. God, I'm absoutely horrid).

But I'm really worried that everyone is going to be playing Mordecai, and I really hope that isn't the case.  Of course, there's going to be a few diehards who are playing the character because that's what they're good at, but I see a lot of bad people picking him up too, kind of like Necromancers in Diablo II, or Hunters and Rogues in World of Warcraft (I personally played a rogue, and was one of the top on my server as far as PVP was concerned).

This entire post might sound hypocritical, but it's serious.  I know I'll be playing this character more than the others, but is everyone else going to be doing the same?

What are your opinions?  Are characters going to end up being picked over others and totally overplayed?  Are there going to be 10000 Mordecais and 10 Liliths?

Since we don't know how the

Since we don't know how the characters actually work, people will either go with what they are familiar with, or what sounds appealing. The player dedicated to long-range DPS isn't a new concept; everybody knows it and how to use it. The straight-out shooter is also very familiar, this is an FPS after all. The melee-based tank is more of an RPG concept, but still familiar and appealing. The mage, however, doesn't often fit into the FPS genre. Not to mention that we have no idea about what she actually does, aside from a skill or two concerning temporal bubbles. Right now, she's just a girl who can manipulate time to a limited extent. I, personally, wouldn't be surprised if many people thought that this meant that she wasn't effective with guns.

Speaking of which, people seem to be under the impression that Mordecai will be bad with everything but sniper rifles and pistols, and that the other characters can't use a sniper rifle well. Everyone can use everything, unless it's a skill based on the character. For example, Mordecai's headshot damage boost skill augment his sniper rifle, but it works on the entire party at all ranges. It's just that the other characters can't use that skill. Mordecai's skills will lean towards that of a long-range combatant, Brick's to that of a brawler, Lilith's to that of a Siren (what that is, we don't truly know), and Roland will be a medium between Mordecai and Brick. You can easily have a Mordecai that's better with a shotgun than a sniper rifle, just as you can have a Brick who's better with a DMR than a sword.

Maybe not easily, but you get my point.

Yes, you can have 4 Mordecais.

L3vi thanks for the input..

L3vi thanks for the input.. I've been wondering how the weapon skills work myself as well.  I was hoping they'd keep it similar to the demo at E3, where I could have a Mordecai that specialized in sniper rifles but could pull out a sword when things got real close because weapons were based on skills universal to all four characters.

The personal skill trees are another worry of mine, but hopefully they'll turn out well, it would actually be nice if they weren't even "trees," just a selection of skills.  I'd enjoy using a weapon that's more like the high rate of fire rifle, I forget the name at the moment.. it was something400, instead of the one shot one kill Dahl monsters, but that could end up being totally ineffective from the skill trees.  Hopefully they turn out to be something that allows for freedom of choice rather than over specilization.

I just think it'll be interesting to see who leans towards what.. I think Gearbox will do a good enough job of balancing the characters, and people tend to use what is overpowered.  I'd be ok with everyone playing Mordecai, as long as people understood that seperation between the good and the bad, heh... My favorite thing about being a rogue was being known as the "good rogue" among all the "bad rogues".

But maybe that's just my egomaniacal side speaking...

I'm looking forward to this game more every time I read a bit about it, hah..

 I see myself creating a

I see myself creating a Lilith, a Roland, and a Mordecia.  Probably in that order.

My gut tells me they're gonna make Brick tank.  And I hate playing tanks.

I will probably be a Roland

I will probably be a Roland first, just because his name is awesome. Then Mordecia, then Liltih, then Brick (is that really his official name, how stupid and unoriginal)

What about this new graphics

What about this new graphics style??

Just kidding!

But in the PC Gamer article is said his name was brick, and didnt infer that it was a code name in anyway. So yes, his real name is brick.

I'm Definately A "Mordecai"

In games like CoD, I pride myself in being able to kill enemies that are trying to kill team mates from as high up of a concealed place I could find. Although I never gitch out of the map (cuz thats cheap), Im the one that glitches to high up vantage points. Although, I have to say, Lilith really intrigues me, I want to play as her at some point too.

Brick is most definitely the

Brick is most definitely the melee/tank character, he'll be the one taking damage.. Roland is the half and half combo of Brick and Mord..

Lilith doesn't appeal to me at all, but I can see her turning into the most finessful character and probably the most powerful once you develop her skills..

I'm still wondering what the deal is with Weapon Skills..

Does every character have a Shotgun, Sniper, Melee, Assault Rifle, Pistol, etc skill that begins at one and is leveled up seperately from the skill tree?  Do they start a little differently from the other characters, will Mord have a lower Shotgun skill than Brick?

I'm waiting for them to release the dang skill trees.. as long as one of Mord's doesn't focus on his damn little hawk I'll be ok.

Skill trees

The sense I got origionally is that they are mostly supplimentry skills... so like stalker, you don't get a skill that makes your gun magically do 10 times more damage, but you can upgrade your turret, or your little bird buddy, or your time magic, or your steriods...  although I really don't know.   It seems like from the PC game article that if you were a lower level than someone else you'd be pretty much fucked, and it wasn't just the fault of the gear.

My origional logic was that, guns just did the damage they do, with the possible exception of, for example, mordicais skill to increase headshot damage, and then the different abilites the different classes get compliment thier roles.  So Roland, being a jack of all trades uses his turret to tank for him while he DPS's, where as Brick uses steriods to shrug off damage and cover ground rapidly dealing massive damage up close, lylth doesn't have physical skills, she uses her time magic to change the face of the battlefield, so she'd target the enemy turret embankment and all of the guys there all of a sudden move 1/8th the speed and fire 1/8th the ROF until they get our of her time bubble, making the enemies strongest point thier biggest weakness in one foul swoop.  The skill enhancement upgrade your abilities, not your outright damage with weapons.  Proficiences with weapons I wouldn't mind if they decreased reload times, or like in roland's case it gives him the ability to steadily create ammo...  But I didn't expect it to be so blatant as "guns do +5 damage"

I love that idea too,

I love that idea too, honestly.. If those skill trees are supplementary then I'd totally be satisfied.  I'd also like to see a lot of synergizing between the characters.  I could see a Lilith/Mordecai team being massively overpowered, as well as a Roland/Brick team, or Brick/Lilith..

I wonder how they're going to do difficulty settings, I can only pray it's like Diablo II, the harder you play, the better your gear..

In which case I'm finding someone who wants to play Lilith and farming the hardest difficulty for as long as they can stand :P

How would Lilith's TIme magic

How would Lilith's TIme magic work in co-op. I can imagine that being very annoying for other players.
