PS3 Split-screen question

Hello
So I was playing Borderlands, and found this awesome Siren Class Mod, but Im a hunter, so my brother asked me if he could have it, I said that I didnt know. So my question is:
Can I play with my character, which is on my log in, and my brother play with his character, which is on his log in? (Split-Screen)
This isnt just for trading items, I played with my bro while he was a level 1 something, that wasnt very fun.

Possibly..
I have played Split-screen just to trade weapons I farm on my Hunter to my other toons.
When I am asked who I want to load it doesnt ask me if want to load from say, my room mates profile, just the save files that are on my profile.
I'll check to see if it is possible when I get home from work today and update this post.

I believe you need to be on separate consoles to make trading/duplicating weapons work...otherwise you simply "exit" the entire staff out the door.

The main reason is to play
The main reason is to play together, not to trade items. The reason I wrote the trading stuff, was because the first time I were trying to do it, it was for trading
but thanks for trying :P
Most likely it is possible I do not know. I have it for PC but usually the games will allow you do do that.
