A revolver (and any other kind of handgun) VS Rifles?

I for one wants to play mordecai. A sniper is fucken awesome. But from what I've understood he is better with a handgun as a sidearm then automatics (which is Rolands thing). How do you think a handgun will compare to a rifle?

I want to pick people off with my sniper and then go in and blow the shit out of the rest with my huge kickass revolver. If the rifles do more damage than the handguns then there's almost no reason to use them

What do you think?

The way I see it

I know for a fact there has to be atleast 1000 or more awesome handguns with scopes for sniping. And its hard to compare a rifle againist a handgun because they both have different uses. I plan on using roland and a decent handgun will be what I shoot with first depending on the situation. Then out comes the shotgun or smg whatever I find first.  You choose what you want to use, if you want to just use a handgun thats fine aslong as your a good shot and the damage/accuracy is good you'll survive.

Use

Well a handgun would obviously be more use in close range.  It has a faster rate of fire, larger clip size, and ease of use in close range so it has it's place.

The sniper rifles for

The sniper rifles for Mordacai can be boosted with crit and other such boosts, read an interview that one player with a high level Mordacai was getting 200,000dmg plus with critical headshots!!! Thats nothing to sneeze at.

But there is just something cool about a big bold hand cannon. Not sure who would have some good hangun bonuses, but wil likely roll a gunslinger at some point. Maybe the sniper headshotty bonuses will carry over to scoped hanguns? We shall see.

well...
sub-machine guns would have a faster rate of fire and lower accuracy perfect for close-range shooting where you wouldn't want a sniper rifle. from the reviews its been mentioned that the weapons have a predictable feel to them. which means sniper rifles will "feel" cumbersome in tight places and pistols will "feel" small & agile in tight places. so in conclusion there will be a use for all the gun classes.

So its gonna be great to have

So its gonna be great to have a shotty, smg, sniper, and big ass revolver all mapped to the D-pad.

Actually...

A large, high damage revolver would likely be better than many of the SMG's as they tend to have very low damage per shot and reasonably low accuracy, even if they do fire 200 rounds/minute.  Say you get an SMG that does 5 damage per shot and has an accuracy rating of 60%.  Compare that to a large revolver that does 100 damage per shot but has fires maybe 20 rounds/minute at 75% accuracy.  So, even if you are getting more shots off with the SMG, you will have a better chance to do more damage from a greater distance with the revolver (which usually tend to be workable up to a good medium range).  I'm just saying, I don't think that revolvers (or SMG's) should be relagated strictly to CQC (close quarters combat).  That is the role of the shotgun.  And while yes SMG's and revolvers may work in that instance, I typically have the best luck with them in a medium-short distance setting using the SMG's in bursts and lining up headshots with the revolvers.

why only two.. why not four?

later on you unlock four total gun slots, so if u wanna have a sniper handgun and a rifle, you could, and still have one slot for whatever else you want, maybe even another handgun..and just because mordecai is better with a revolver and roland is better with a rifle doesnt mean mordecai cant become good with a rifle or the other way around, the longer you use the gun the more proficent you get with it, making it more effective

What about the sword?

I think I'll roll Mordecai to begin with, too.  I like the idea of using pistols (revolvers in particular), and have always had fun with them in games featuring decent ones (or realistic enough damage that it doesn't matter if you get a headshot).  Sniping is also always fun, as are swords and crazy alien pets. It seems like a near-perfect fit for my style.  So I'd have to have a slot dedicated to a Sniper Rifle, another dedicated to a Revolver, and third dedicated to something more close-range.  The sword could really change things.

I remember some articles mentioning Mordecai having access to a sword for close range.  Although I haven't come across any mention of different varieties of swords for him, it would seem strange if he were stuck with just one for the entire game.  I wonder if the sword will take the place of the standard melee attack (assuming there's a button dedicated to melee) or must be equipped like any other weapon.  If the sword were just a glorified standard melee attack, would it still make sense to have upgraded versions?  Do other characters have their choice in melee weapons or (aside from Brick) the ability to otherwise improve their melee?  Also, I wonder what the sword's damage potential would be -- could it be comparable to a shotty or SMG at close range?  If not, will it be fun enough to use that I won't really care?  Any of those factors might change what I'd like to have hotkeyed.
