Don't expect Borderlands any time soon. Randy Pitchford in a new interview says the game still has "a lot of work." Stocks might actually be going up by the time we see this game. Still, better later and good than sooner and crap.
"We still have a lot of work to do with Borderlands. We announced the game last year, and you can see that it's evolved a lot. We're fulfilling the promise, but you can see there's still a lot of work to do. When we do it that way, we get a lot of feedback. We get to incorporate that." (Via 1UP)

But it's good to know that they will make this a good game. As long as they make it great I can wait longer.

Release Date
I work at GameStop and Borderlands was in our computers for release 2/2/09 until about a week ago when it changed to 9/1/09. I actually think that's not a fake date because 9/1/09 falls on a Tuesday which is the release date of most games. Funny thing is all of our marketing stuff is still telling us to advertise it for 2/2/09 lol.

Thanks for posting that info. Given the low level of marketing for the game currently and your point about it falling on a Tuesday, that sounds like a plausible release date.
They're smart for not re-naming a release date after they pushed back the October one. This way they can't miss it again.
