Gearbox Slips Up, Mentions Top Secret Projects "Cedar" And "Oak"

in Gearbox Software, Project Cedar, Project Oak

At the big gaming events like DICE, there's usually plenty to talk about during and afterwards. The problem is that the developers and publishers control all the information so we usually end up discussing exactly what they want us to.

But every once and a while something slips through the cracks that we weren't supposed to hear about. That's exactly what happened at a Dice 2010 presentation by Randy Pitchford, top dog at our favorite developer Gearbox Software, the geniuses that made Borderlands.

For most of the presentation, Randy got to look cool and collected in the wake of the success of Borderlands, but there was a brief faux pas. One of Randy's slides mentioned two projects that he was not ready to talk about.

As for its future plans, the company is working on two games, code-named "Cedar" and "Oak." The two projects were on an internal schedule slide that Pitchford presented, and he was somewhat alarmed that they could be clearly read on the large screen. "Good thing we code-name all our projects after trees," he said, laughing nervously. (via Gamespot)

Oops, better fire that Powerpoint intern.

No indication on what exactly those games are but there's some tantalizing tidbits we already have. For years now, Gearbox has linked to Halo 4. There were also those curious rumors about the possible MMO Borderworlds.

Or maybe Gearbox is just making a couple games about trees. We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

I am looking forward to these new projects.  I guess that I am not so eager to find out all the details before it actually comes out.  I am willing to wait a bit. The companies have also used text marketing to get the word out on new projects. When I receive a text from the company itself, I am more apt to trust it than from a rumor site. My advice is to just wait for the official word.
